The Pitt Rivers Museum Visit





Pitt Rivers was, by all accounts, both crazy and amazing. He collected tens of thousands of artifacts from all around the world between 1850 and 1900 and donated them to the University of Oxford if they would care for them, house them and display them. Sounds like a great gift, but it must have been a nightmare. It's like the biggest Victorian attic you can imagine. I wrote more extensively about this in an earlier blog, I think. Anyway, I'm including photos of a dead bird used as a candle-holder, Ojibwe beadwork from northern Minnesota, a hummingbird feather cape from Hawaii, symbols of death
